Being responsible is about showing maturity and managing yourself effectively – both your time and your commitments. It is not about whining and making excuses.
At university you might show responsibility by:
- Doing all assignments on time – how many times do you need to ask for an extension? Is it usually because you haven’t been organised?
- Attending all classes – on time and prepared. Do you assume responsibility for your own learning?
- Addressing important issues – if you are late, absent or haven’t done part of a group project, do you tell teachers or team mates? Or do you just pretend it’s not an issue?
- Using time management strategies – use the calendar on your phone or email and write "to do" lists. Don’t rely on your memory and then claim, "I forgot!"
- Focusing on the task – do not allow yourself to be distracted by mobile phones, texts or emails during class time. Most people cannot multitask as well as they think they can!
