Insulation testing

Do you already know how to test the resistance condition of insulation using an IR meter?

If yes, do this challenge now.

If no, you can: complete the Reinforcement activity, or see your trainer.

Follow the process stated below to perform the practical activity 'testing the insulation condition of a 240 volt installation'.

Prepare for the activity

Obtain your trainer's approval before commencing this practical activity.

Download and print the Word document insulation testing (Word59kb). This document provides step by step instructions that must be followed to complete the insulation testing procedure.

Access the following equipment:

  • bridging leads
  • screwdriver
  • insulation resistance (IR) tester
  • 240 volt installation.

Note: see your trainer for advice on what electrical installation to use in performing this test.

Conduct the activity

Conduct a test to determine the condition of the insulation between all live conductors (including the neutral) and the earth.

Test insulation

Note: See your trainer for specific instructions relevant to the system being tested.

Evaluate your results

Record the findings of your insulation test and determine insulation condition.

Present your completed insulation testing document to your trainer for feedback.

Note: The completed insulation testing document can be saved as evidence of work completed.
