- Sporcle is a fun way to learn some of these elements.
- Watch SBS news or read the news from another country; for example:
- Al Jazeera – is based in Doha and offers perspectives that may be different to mainstream Western news.
- The Local has Germany’s news in English.
- The Buenos Aires Herald has an Argentinian take on world news.
- Every day, for 10 minutes, search Google for 'What’s in the news?' – be aware of some key issues that are concerning governments, businesses and people around the world.
- Some computer games can help you develop general knowledge about the world – from Assassin’s Creed to World of Warcraft…but don’t kid yourself that you are actually studying!
- Historical novels are another way to further your knowledge.
- DFAT – “facts” on countries.
- CIA – World fact book - “facts” about countries from an American point of view:
- Read – books, blogs, the news – from a range of cultures and authors.
- Travel – and work and/or study. But don’t be a tourist. Learn some of the language and go off the beaten track.
- Film festivals – lots of countries and regions have film festivals in Australia from Scandinavia to India. Broaden your mind!
