As you can imagine, it’s a bit tricky being a Global Citizen if you don’t have a general sense of the world – that would be geographic and cultural knowledge (about your part or parts of the world – and the world more broadly).
If you didn’t pay too much attention learning geography at school and if you haven’t travelled much, you might be surprised at how much you don’t know!
As well as knowing about countries – where they are, what the major cities are - you should have a general sense of some key aspects of the history, language, culture of different areas. You can’t know everything about everywhere, but General Knowledge about different areas of the world is a must for a Global Citizen.
In a way, it is easy to know ‘facts’ about places, but more tricky to understand the implications of some facts.
So, imagine you have been flown to Vietnam for a meeting about a business deal. Someone at the meeting says, “Can you tell us a little about Australian culture?” What would you say? And if they ask, “What is the population of Australia?” Could you answer correctly? Students have been overheard saying that they don’t know!
