Your cultural identity is your sense of belonging. It influences what behaviour you think is appropriate, what you regard as right or wrong, the way you communicate, your views on family and even the way you dress and eat.
Phinney (2008) states “Cultural identity is a complex, dynamic sense of belonging to one or more cultural groups, including the values, attitudes, and meanings associated with a sense of belonging to these groups. It defines the way in which individuals position or identify themselves in relation to the various cultural contexts in which they live, such as their ethnic group and their country of residence. It encompasses far more than the self-categorisation or label one uses to identify oneself, such as Finnish, Vietnamese, or Mexican American.”
Think about what are some of the visible and invisible indicators of cultural identity.
