Fabrication
Follow the steps below to fabricate a battery charger.
1. Preparation
Download and print the Word document battery charger (Word 592kb). This document provides instruction on the steps to follow to fabricate and assemble a battery charger.
Access the following equipment and components:
- sheet metal
- battery charger components (see list in Word document)
- hand tools including a scriber, a ruler, a punch, a hammer, screwdrivers
- equipment including drills and drill press, a folding machine, soldering equipment, a hole cutter.

Discuss with your trainer an alternative range of tools, equipment and components suited to a different fabrication task.
2. Mark out sheet metal
Following the drawing plan in the Word document, mark out the sheet metal.
Have your trainer check your markings when complete.
Note: If you have any difficulty or are unsure of how to complete any of the steps involved in the assembly and construction of the battery charger, see your trainer for assistance and advice.
3. Drill and cut holes
Use the appropriate sized drill bits and equipment to drill and cut holes.
4. Bend sheet metal
Use a folding machine to bend sheet metal into required positions.
5. Assemble circuit board
Follow instructions to position and solder componentry onto a circuit board.
6. Wind transformer
Follow instructions to wind and insulate a transformer.
7. Assemble battery charger
Fit all componentry into a battery charger and test operation.
8. Submit the activity
Present your completed battery charger to your trainer for feedback.
Return equipment and clean up your work area.
