Drills, taps and dies

Follow the steps below to perform the practical activity of producing threads using drills, taps and dies.

1. Preparation

Download and print the Word document drilling and tapping (Word 419kb). This document provides instruction on the steps involved in drilling and tapping a thread in a plastic mounting box.

Access the following equipment:

  • 18mm hole saw
  • Drill (hand held electric or bench drill)
  • Scriber
  • Punch
  • Steel ruler
  • Tap and tap handle
  • Plastic mounting box (Clipsal gang surface or similar)
  • 20mm plain to screw adaptor

or

Discuss with your trainer alternative parts and equipment.

2. Mark out, drill and tap a hole

Follow the steps in the Word document.

3. Submit the activity

Present your completed work to your trainer for feedback.

Return equipment and clean up your work area.
