Joining

Sheet metal can be joined using a number of methods. The most suitable method to use depends on factors such as material thickness and the requirement for the parts to be easily disassembled or not.

Joining methods include:

  • welding
  • using fasteners.

Permanent joins can be made by welding. However this is not a common method used in the electrical trade. A MIG welder is most suitable for welding sheet metal, but it requires a large amount of practice to perfect the process. Arc welding and braising tend to bucklel or melt the metal and are better suited to heavier materials.

Fasteners commonly used to join sheet metal include pop rivets and self-tapping screws.
