Measuring
Tape measure
The graduated tape is available as steel or fibreglass tape encased in a metal or plastic surround.
Steel tape lengths generally range from 2 metres to 10 metres.
Fibreglass tapes are generally much longer and can be as long as 100 metres.
Application:
- General purpose measuring of length, width or height of various accessories, eg position of outlet from the floor, or measuring the length of conduit, etc.
String line
A roll of string (with limited stretch) used as a straight line guide.
Application:
- Straight line guide when installing long rows of lighting fittings.
- Straight line guide for leveling duct or cable tray.
Plumb bob
A string approximately 4m in length with a weight attached to the end. Used to transfer a point vertically up or down or for a straight vertical line guide.
Application:
- Plot the centring of lighting in a room.
- Straight-line guide when running vertical conduit or duct.
Spirit levels
Sprit levels have a glass bulb semi-filled with fluid. The bubble within the fluid indicates level. A variety of lengths are available from 150mm up to 1.5 metres.
Application:
- Check that switchboards are level/straight.
- Check socket outlets and light switches are level when fitting.
