Workshop practices

Safety

Fabrication requires the use of a range of tools (including hand and power tools), equipment and materials. All of these present safety hazards.

Following OHS standards and observing good workshop practice will reduce the risk. This would include:

  • not using any tools or equipment that you have not been instructed on
  • observing operating instructions for all tools and equipment
  • using appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) when using tools or handling materials
  • storing materials appropriately. In some cases material safety data needs to be observed
  • keeping your work area and work benches clean
  • using correct lifting techniques
  • using lifting devices for heavy materials or equipment
  • ensuring that electrical leads and tools don't present electrocution or tripping risks
  • not playing pranks or mucking about in work areas
  • removing, reporting or repairing anything that you see as a risk.
