Mechanical drawings

Introduction

Mechanical drawings are needed in order to fabricate an object. The drawing will often be supplied to you by a third party or you may have drawn it yourself. It is the plan and specifications of the object that you want to fabricate. In order to be able to accurately and correctly fabricate the object, you must be able to read and interpret the plan.

To ensure that any person can interpret drawings, there are national and international standards for mechanical drawing. The Australian Standard (AS) that would apply for electrical trade mechanical drawing are:

  • AS1100 – Technical Drawing part 101 – General Principles
  • AS1102 – Graphic Symbols for Electrotechnology (parts 1 – 15).
