Rescue breathing
The term 'rescue breathing' has replaced 'expired air resuscitation' (EAR). The guidelines now recommend that full CPR be given to all those requiring resuscitation.
If the person is breathing, roll the person into the recovery position. Phone 000 and check the person regularly until medical assistance arrives.
If the person is not breathing, place one hand on their forehead and with your other hand lift the chin slightly so that their mouth opens. Seal your mouth over their mouth, pinch their nose gently and blow steadily for two breaths.
Tilting head back and opening mouth
If there is no sign of life after two breaths, make sure 000 has been called and quickly commence chest compressions.
Review the casualty's condition to see if any signs of life have returned (coughing, movement, normal breathing), but the important thing is not to delay commencing compressions while you look for signs of life.
