First Aid Kit
First aid facilities will vary from one workplace to the next. Employers should ensure that first aid kits contain contents in quantities appropriate for their workplace, taking into consideration:
- size and layout of workplace
- number of employees
- type of work, ie shift overtime and flexible hours
- nature of hazards in the workplace
- location of the workplace
- known occurrences of accidents.
The container should protect the contents of the kit from dust and damage. It should be easily recognisable (ie a white cross with a green background displayed on the front) and should never be locked.
Some of the items likely to be found in the basic first aid kit are as follows:
- emergency services telephone numbers
- name and telephone numbers of workplace first aides
- basic first aid notes
- sterile adhesive dressings
- sterile eye pads
- triangular bandages
- safety pins
- dressings - small, medium, and large
- adhesive tape
- crepe bandage
- disposable gloves
- scissors.
Note: You should know exactly where your nearest first aid kit is located.
