Definition
Manual handling is not just about lifting heavy objects; it can also involve physical exertion such as lowering, pushing, carrying, moving, holding or restraining.
Manual handling could involve activities such as:
- lifting a heavy toolbox in and out of a vehicle
- lifting a drum of cable onto a stand
- working inside a roof or cramped space
- working at a workbench which is too high or low
- awkwardly positioning the body to reach under a machine
- working in one spot in an uncomfortable position for too long
- loosening tightly fastened bolts / screws
- physically pulling components apart.
