Definition

Manual handling is not just about lifting heavy objects; it can also involve physical exertion such as lowering, pushing, carrying, moving, holding or restraining.

Manual handling could involve activities such as:

  • lifting a heavy toolbox in and out of a vehicle
  • lifting a drum of cable onto a stand
  • working inside a roof or cramped space
  • working at a workbench which is too high or low
  • awkwardly positioning the body to reach under a machine
  • working in one spot in an uncomfortable position for too long
  • loosening tightly fastened bolts / screws
  • physically pulling components apart.
