Individualism vs collectivism

An integral part of Dutch sociologist Geert Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory is the concept of individualism vs collectivism. This concept can be applied when comparing cultural trends between cultures. Not everyone agrees with Hofstede's ideas and some critics think he's racist. So just know that these ideas are out there.

Keep in mind that:

  • Individualist cultures tend to emphasise individual self-determination, pursuit of self-interest, and self-actualisation
  • Collectivist cultures tend to stress the importance of group goals over individual goals as well as traditional authority such as a family or workplace.
