Working well together online: Empathy

When working on a group task, it's important to remember that we are all have our strengths and weaknesses, and that external factors can sometimes affect our university life.

For example, it can be easy to consider that team members are lazy when they are falling behind on group work. However, there may be reasons behind why they are struggling to keep up with a task.

Here are some tips for getting to know your team members and understanding their situation:

  • Take some time in the beginning to get to know each other. This will make it easier to communicate and work together.
    • You may like to start with a getting-to-know-you activity.
  • Ask team members what their strengths are and what they have difficulties with. This can help your group to assign tasks to the best person.
  • Be mindful that your group members may have family or work commitments, so they may not be able to respond to messages or emails straightaway.
  • Sometimes you will encounter a group member who is not contributing. Maybe they are shy or maybe they don't understand the task. Reach out and see if they are ok.
  • If you can't contact a group member, let your lecturer or tutor know as they may need extra support.
