... Collection of information

How to collect information

Personal or sensitive information must be collected in a fair and lawful manner (NPP1). This means that personal information may not be obtained via deception or trickery.

You should collect information directly from customers whenever possible. You must get customer consent to obtain information from a third party. If personal information is provided through a third party, then you must make every attempt to inform and check the information with the customers themselves.

Ensure the customer has adequate privacy for activities that involve discussion of sensitive information. For example, do not raise your voice when dealing with a customer to ensure you do not reveal personal information to other customers (NPP2).

You need to be open (NPP5) in your approach to collecting information. VFS has a privacy policy brochure (this information can also be downloaded from our websites). These documents explain our information handling policies and may be given to anyone (even a non-customer) who asks about our privacy policies.
