Identifying dangerous goods

A classification system has been designed to assist people to recognise the risk posed from dangerous goods and substances.

The system places dangerous goods into one of nine different classes. Each of the classes is easily recognisable, by an image called a class label.

In this activity a number of dangerous goods are presented, as well as nine different class labels. The activity requires you to select the appropriate class label for each of the dangerous goods.

The nine class labels are:

  1. Radioactive 7.
  2. Flammable liquid 3.
  3. Miscellaneous dangerous goods 9.
  4. Corrosive 8.
  5. Flammable solid 4.
  6. Oxidising agent 5.1.
  7. Toxic 6.
  8. Flammable gas 2.
  9. Explosive 1.

The dangerous goods presented are:

  1. Methylated spirit.
  2. Battery acid.
  3. Fire lighters.
  4. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG).
  5. Asbestos.
  6. Propane.
  7. Unleaded petrol.

Answers and feedback

Methylated spirit is classified as a flammable liquid.

Battery acid is classified as corrosive.

Fire lighters are classified as a flammable solid.

Asbestos is classified as miscellaneous dangerous goods.
