Circuits

The path the current flows through is called an electric circuit.

An operational circuit needs voltage supply (such as the battery), conductors (electrical wires) and a load (in this example the globe). This circuit also has a switch allowing the flow of current to be turned on or off.

With the switch turned on, as shown in diagram 1, there is a path for current to flow from the positive terminal of the battery to the globe. Current then flows through the globe and back to the negative terminal of the battery.

With the switch turned off, as shown in diagram 2, the circuit is broken or open. In an open circuit there is no path for current to flow.
