Tape measure video – text version

Using a tape measure

The video shows a builder using a tape measure to take a measurement. He shows two different ways of measuring the space between two studs:

  • lining up the tape measure with the edge of the second stud
  • using the body of the tape measure as part of the measurement.

The audio for the video is as follows:

'One of the uses of the tape measure is to measure a piece of timber that I need to cut and the example I've got here is I need to cut a piece of timber to become a nogging, to go between these two studs. So I use the tape measure by placing one end of the measure flush against the inside edge of this stud, hold it in position, look across to my scale here, see where it lines up with the inside edge of this stud, and what I've got there is 400, plus 20, plus 3, I've 423 millimetres.

The other way I can take this measurement is to use the body of the tape measure in the measurement, what I do in this case is again one edge of the tape measure flush with one edge of the stud and this time the body of the tape measure flush against the other stud. I lock the tape measure into place and then I can remove the tape measure and read the scale. What I have here is a reading of 334 millimetres, to that I have to add the length of the tape measure, which in this case is 89 millimetres, it's always written on the tape measure.
So what I end up with is a measurement of 334 mm plus 89 mm of my tape measure, which in total ends up to be 423 mm.
