The Department of Computer Science in RMIT is the largest department within the Faculty of Applied Science, and one of the largest CS Departments in Australia. With a total full-time academic and support staff of 64, and over 100 sessional and part-time staff, the Department offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs to 2,000 equivalent full-time students. The Department has grown significantly over the last few years, especially in the area of on-line, off campus learning, currently servicing about 1,000 students in this mode.

Due to its current size and operational complexity, the Department of Computer Science is to become the School of Computer Science and Information Technology. The Department is now seeking a Foundation Head of School to lead the process.

The Department is based on a 2-campus operation, City and Bundoora, which cooperate intensively. Current offerings range from 6 Bachelor programs in Computer Science, Software Engineering and Internet Technology, to Graduate Diplomas in Software Development and Internet and Web Computing. The Department also offers Masters and PhD programs by Course Work and Research, primarily related to the established research groups in AI, Databases, Distributed Systems, Document Management, Software Engineering, Human Computer Communication and Web and Internet Technology. The Department also has strong formal links to the Multimedia Database research group and the Software Engineering Research Centre. It is expected that the new Head of School will share the Department's ethos and values, and that his/her leadership will enhance its vision for the future by:

  • maintaining the quality of its graduates, achieved through programs that have an equal emphasis on both theory and practice;

  • seeking to make a significant contribution to Computing and IT education through the use of innovative teaching and learning strategies in addition to more traditional ones;

  • actively leading research activities and properly supporting staff and students in their research efforts and their collaboration with other research groups and institutions;

  • providing administrative direction to Coordinators and Program Leaders currently operating;

  • fostering a supportive, collaborative environment in which to work.
